According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch® , USA farmed Tilapia is a „"Best Choice," and Ecuadorean farmed tilapia is a "Good Alternative."
Ecuadorean farms are adopting USA methods and standards. Farms using older methods are losing market share.
Vermont based Tropical Aquaculture's farms are certified by the Global Aquaculture Alliance Best Aquaculture Practices.
Tropical is engaged in the development of World Wildlife Fund's International Standards for Responsible Tilapia Aquaculture for the Aquaculture Stewardship Council. Global GAP recently certified Tropical's farms in Ecuador to be in compliance with these standards.
Tropical has SQF Level 3 Certification, part of GFSI and GlobalG.A.P. certification for the European Community.
Ecuadorean farms are polyculture operations with fish densities of 1.3 fish per cubic meter vs. 60 fish per cubic meter monoculture typical in Asian farms.
